The Extra Mile Reading Tutor
LET'S IGNITE THEIR INDEPENDENCE
Elevate reading skills and empower the reader.
Hi, I'm Malissa Stoudymire...Known as Mrs. S, I am a licensed educator who goes the “extra mile” for my students. Going the "extra" mile originated as a motto in my own classroom. I encouraged them to be independent thinkers, to go beyond the status quo, push themselves to read a little longer, learn a new vocabulary word, write a more detailed sentence, to go the extra mile.
However, you can't go very far without the ability to read. Reading impacts all areas of life, but this doesn't have to be your child's story. I've heard countless stories from parents of children who fell through the cracks in school, had unaddressed learning challenges, and the damage to self-esteem that can come as a result. Let's address these roadblocks together, reroute their frustration-filled journey, and end it with a successful destination.
I provide reading help for kids. I'm here to be your child's reading guide, to quickly navigate the necessary steps to get your child reading accurately and fluently. I make it my goal to build a lifelong love for reading in each and every child.
Learning the Child
I love digging into data. I begin by identifying the academic gaps, determine what works for your child’s learning style and personality and begin there. I work to build rapport with each of my students and get to know them as individuals. I help them realize they can do “hard things” and encourage them to be curious critical thinkers. I embody my mantra to "stay curious" as I often engage in professional development courses in literacy and math. I'm trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading instruction and in addition have math and gifted education endorsements.

I use an approach that is aligned with the science of reading and is systematic and explicit. Research has shown reading instruction is most effective if delivered in a planned, and logically progressive sequence. This approach equips children with what they need to make decisions as they decode. In short, it allows the struggling reader to transform into an independent one.
It's important to note that in education, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for helping a struggling child so it is my duty to meet the student where they are in their learning journey and adjust my lessons as they progress. All sessions are held online and employ multi-sensory instructional practices to engage struggling readers in grades K-5.
Passion-Driven Work
Teaching is my passion, so much so that I traded a lucrative career in marketing communications to pursue a more fulfilling role in education. Later, I moved from the classroom to full-time online tutoring which allowed me the flexibility to work with children of all ages from across the globe. I have worked with students of all ability levels, from neurodivergent learners to gifted students from age 4 to 16. I work with private, public, and charter school students and have served as a homeschool family education consultant and private tutor.

As we are crossing the anniversary of beginning reading tutoring with Ms. Stoudymire, I can say that it has been an amazing journey for my daughter and for me as a parent. My child, who was not reading when we first started, is now thriving at school and has become an outperformer in the class. This shift has given her extraordinary confidence and me great peace of mind! Ms. Stoudymire’s experience is clearly shown in how she approaches and covers my kid´s areas of opportunity and the school deficiencies, setting all the stress aside! Tutoring classes with Ms. Stoudymire is not an expense, it is the best investment I have made in my child´s education!
